In its own quarry in the state of Arkansas, Dan's Whetstone Company Inc. produces the famous sharpening stones, often known as Novaculite, which are offered in different degrees of hardness.

The grain sizes are not defined as with synthetic stones, but vary within a stone. But it is precisely this "uneven" distribution that gives Arkansas stones their excellent grinding properties.
The density and thus the hardness of the stone determines the granulation, the denser the stone, the higher the granulation range in which the stone moves.

Roughly divided as follows:

- Soft Arkansas stone approx. 400 - 600 grit JIS
- Hard Arkansas stone approx. 800 - 1000 grit JIS
- Hard Black Arkansas stone approx. 2000 - 3000 grit JIS
- Surgical Black Arkansas approx. 4000 - 6000 grit JIS
- Translucent Arkansas approx. 8000 - 10000 grit JIS

All Arkansas stones are intended for use with a few drops of oil, e.g. our Premium Stoning Oil. Simply wipe off with a soft cloth after use.
